How do I approach a cute guy at the gym?

So I've been going to the school gym every day now, and been seeing that very very very cute guy...One time I left my ipod without the headphones in the cup of one of the machines. I didn't forget about it, but while taking a break between reps, I went to work on a different muscle group on a different machine. This cute mister approached me giving me my ipod. I thanked him, and we stared into each other for a little bit, and then I left. On the next day, I saw him again, and said hi and he said hi back shyly, but that was all. Today I saw him again, but he was with a friend of his. He saw me too, but we didn't make any contact. I just left. I really want to talk to him because he attracts me a lot, but need an advice from you guys! I don't want to feel like a fool, and I really want to think that he is somehow interested, but it might be wishful thinking.
